They are very pricey, but if you are willing to take that plunge, you won't be disappointed. I was disappointed some how I lost the upright sound and too bright for my liking so I put back on the Thomastik Jazz JF 344 and I'm so glad I did. If they last as long as reported, then the value over time would be great. I like the growl, particularly on the E & A and they do feel nicely balanced, with the exception of the G (a 43) which to me feels far stiffer than the other strings, and which Im not keen on. The Tomastik Jazz Flats are excellent if you're looking for that old school vibe. The high end brightness mellowed off after a few weeks, but they've stayed clear and they can growl in a midrangey way. I like the growl, particularly on the E & A and they do feel nicely balanced, with the exception of the G (a 43) which to me feels far stiffer than the other strings, and which Im not keen on. The low tension is something that one can get used to but a .43-.100 gauge string is essentially useless for me as soon as the drummer comes in. I love the sustain, tone, ease of playing, and they even seem to be louder than other strings. It can easily cut through any mix, and it's easy on the hands! The touch and response that I get makes them a pleasure to play. These are great strings if you like a lower tension string with a soft feel. I keep my action low, so I can play smooth or dig in for some growl. I normally change my strings every 2 months. I've tried countless different brands of strings over the years, and while there are noticeable differences between them, none provided a fundamental transformation in the way a bass sounds and feels like these do. The Tomastik Jazz Flats are excellent if you're looking for that old school vibe. The high end brightness mellowed off after a few weeks, but they've stayed clear and they can growl in a midrangey way. They feel very loose which I really enjoy and I find that it makes it very easy on your right hand to play(especially if for long gigs). Highly recommended! I've been using roundwounds for decades, but after playing a '62 precision with flats, I wanted some for my second bass. They can sound deep and mellow or you can slap the crap out of them and get the sound you want. They dont sound like anything else Ive used, and I been through a lot of strings.
