Recently I used my moms Top loader and my dipes got MUCH cleaner and actually smell clean, which has never happened before ( because i used a FL) My son is only 4 mos so I still have alot to learn in the means of wash routines but with my FL, and hard water I have tried Bum Genius, Charlies soap and Rock N Green.
LITERALLY SCRUB the inserts, prefolds. At least a Tablespoon. only a teensy bit of detergent and seem to add rinse after rinse after rinse in my wash routine, to no avail. Continue to use Rockin' Green to keep the stinkies at bay. After using it I did see improvement but just like the other attempts the ammonia came back and Clean B along with a number of different cycle settings on my machine. I have tried GroVia Magic Stick, butt paste, Monistat 7, a prescription I think it was called Nystaten, vacoilne, baby powder, feeding him yogurt, desetin and an anti-fungal spray I made myself. We use it only for night dipes and I rinse it in the sink when we get up in the morning. You know, hot washes to get it clean and convert the urea to ammonia and then several cold water rinses (like washer full of water) with good amount of vinegar (low pH and cold temp increase ammonias solubility). We started our wash routine with Country Save and never had a problem until the manufacturer of the cds we use said not to use it. Cloth diapering shouldnt be this hard and a wash routine shouldnt have to consist of me standing watch over a machine to catch it in time to turn up the water heater and then turn down the water heater and then add this and make sure to adjust the knobs to agitate this way and not that way. I have also recently started adding Calgon with my detergent. So many things contribute to urea decomposition to ammonia, theres a lot you can screw up (chemically) when trying to deal with those many, interdependent variables. I noticed that you said you put Grandma EIs cream on them with the cloth. The first soak of funk rock kept the poopy smell away for less than 3 weeks. Do an extra rinse for added cleaning power!
