I'd say it's readable for a 12 year old ( well, as in not inappropriate) but maybe it'd be better apreciated in a couple of years.
By rights, Dune ought to have become a big movie.
Some say it is best to read them in chronological order, meanwhile others think it is better to read them in published order if you ask me, in this case, I think you should start reading this saga by the one book that made Dune series to be known as one of the best science fiction novels ever, that is, starting by the first book published: Dune.
Even the plot couldn't save Dune, since it's spoiled at every juncture by 'Princess Irulan' and her epigraphs before each chapter.
About to turn 40, Herbert had been a working writer since the age of 19, and his fortunes had always been patchy. For Smith, altered states of consciousness were mainly tools for the whiteous and righteous to vaporise whole solar systems of subversives, aliens and others with undesirable traits.
The Legends of Dune trilogy concludes with The Battle of Corrin, which tees up a final apocalyptic showdown between humans and robots. The harshness of their environment has given them an ethic of fellowship and mutual aid. 
It has a lot of similar themes, plot, and saga to Dune, and it has excellent word building and is one of those stories that stick with you.
Just struggling to make sense of the maths that 1969 is 12 years after 1965 though, I just have to comment on the naive attitude that the movies based on the Dune books will tell the same story. Video review.

Have you read everything there is to read about Paul Atreides, but you still can't get enough of the guy? Still want more? Since this novel is, for some, weak. But perhaps Herbert would take heart from the thought that history does not appear to be teleological and some long-term plans do not take on the character of destiny.
Couldve been a more engaging read if it hadnt have been dragged out.

It is highly addictive, and has the side effect of turning the eye of the user a deep blue.
After you have finished with all his original work you can read the sequels and lately Legends of Dune and its sequel. If The Lord of the Rings is about the rise of fascism and the trauma of the second world war, and Game of Thrones, with its cynical realpolitik and cast of precarious, entrepreneurial characters is a fairytale of neoliberalism, then Dune is the paradigmatic fantasy of the Age of Aquarius.

Herbert created a vast and complex system of ancient spatial politics and peoples, then set them at one another's throats over land, money, and drugs. This tapestry of politics, warmongering, and spice battles ends with the birth of Paul Atreides, teeing us up to the saga we know and love (and now, have already read). Its fanbase built through the 60s and 70s, circulating in squats, communes, labs and studios, anywhere where the idea of global transformation seemed attractive.
There's another 50 pages or so of explanatory appendices.

Without it, the entire communication and transport system of the Imperium will collapse. But through Herberts expert characterizations and strong world-building, the issues he addresses parallel issues we are still suffering in recent times. I must not fear. Just wanted to say how much I loved the movie. Above all he was intrigued by the idea that it might be possible to engineer an ecosystem, to green a hostile desert landscape.
Most importantly, the series as a whole is excellent.
If you read these three books you will know how the story of Paul Atreides concludes. Its going to depend on page size, font and font size.
Who published it? More recently hed spent a weird interlude in Washington as a speechwriter for a Republican senator. 
Treachery and tragedy duly ensue, and young Paul survives a general bloodbath to go on the run in the hostile open desert, accompanied, unusually for an adventure story, by his mum. Ah, are the books by Herbert jr worth to read?

Witchy and psychically powerful, the sisters have engaged in millennia of eugenic programming, of which Paul may be the culmination. Great post thank you, big sci fi fan but somehow never worked up the guts to dive in although my dad was also a big Dune fan. What sets this series above most others is its sheer scope.

Here goes the order of the Dune books (extended series). In fact, the first movie gutted the book, mixed the sequence of events in the book, and gave a false idea of how Paul Atreides fought his personal war with himself, and with the Harkonnen. Herbert was a quintessential product of the libertarian culture of the Pacific coast, self-reliant and distrustful of centralised authority, yet with a mile-wide streak of utopian futurism and a concomitant willingness to experiment. Of course not.
In House Harkonnen, Leto Atreides' longtime rival, the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, comes into view. Remember that European beach grass binding together those shifting dunes?
Herbert and Anderson take it all the way back to OG Dune in this prequel about Lady Jessica, mother of Paul Atreides.
There are several versions, both abridged and unabridged.
Its concerns environmental stress, human potential, altered states of consciousness and the developing countries revolution against imperialism are blended together into an era-defining vision of personal and cosmic transformation. Herbert, whose female characters are consistently strong and active, has also ditched the strict sexual divisions of actually existing Bedouin culture.

Looks like you might have been looking at a bunch of commentary on the abridged version. Originally published in1965, and set outwards of 20,000 years in the future; the original saga revolves around the political strife between three noble houses, House Corrino, House Harkonnen, and House Atreides. Thank you, very easy to follow, I always wanted to start the Dune series and now I have some spare time and money to get the books.
