The Blue Room at New York City's CIVILIAN Hotel combines elegant design with Broadway's holy grails. Its not just the before- and after-theater dinners, but its actually the creatives hanging out there, making it their place and instilling the building with energy, Pomeranc said. Although the jewel-box guestrooms may have a compact footprint, they are all pretty special, adds Rockwell, whether its the reappearance of the curtain motif, this time above the headboard and complete with tassels, the light and airy bathrooms outfitted with penny tile, or the artworks that bring theater history to life. Whats unique about the Civilian which started receiving guests in November but is still completing some dining spaces is not that it uses its proximity to Broadway as a thematic springboard. Utilizing unique, immersive, and practical design weve provided our guests with the ability to curate their own stay and prioritize their individual needs. A lot of the details and props in the theater are there to give the actors a complete backstory to tell their story.
Perhaps the Civilian and Rockwell will remind people of the traditions of Broadway design?
It was an intense labor of love, and were still adding more. Yes, lighting. So I think it deserves to have a place thats dedicated to that.. This isnt a building thats shy about its interests. Located in the heart of the historic New York City Theater District, CIVILIAN NYC is bringing a distinctly contemporary experience to the neighborhood. That all got kind of shaken up because we moved when I was still relatively young to Mexico, and that certainly gave me a large dose of new: the excitement of new, the transition of loving theater to loving public [spaces]. Luggage fits under the bed, and bathrooms with glazed porcelain sinks have heated floors. Even in the elevators, youre enclosed by walls covered in the drawings of costumes from Hamilton, Chicago and After Midnight.. Youve got so many people rubbing up against each other and that diversity leads to such a huge range of community spaces. And for it to happen in a setting that isnt a museum. The Blue Room, hidden just off the second-floor bar, is an intimate space designed by Rockwell that features nine vitrines of theatrical curios co-curated by Rockwell and Tazewellcurrent treasures include Robin Wagners 1978 show curtain model for On the Twentieth Century, the original polo shirt and cast from Dear Evan Hansen, a pair of red boots and costume sketches from Kinky Boots, perfume bottles from She Loves Me, shoes from Kiss of the Spider Woman, Elphabas hat from Wicked, dueling pistols from Hamiltons Off-Broadway run, and morethat plan to rotate about once each year. Each floor will have framed art in the hallways clustered around a theme.

But the Civilian raises the bar for Times Square gathering places bathed in a theatrical aesthetic. Ive always had this fascination with the relationship of theater and architecture because theater is ephemeral, but all of those memories last forever. I have spent a career creating energy in frontier neighborhoods and love now being part of the rebirth of one. People who have experienced that, I think, find a sense of home in more temporal experiences. There is art in every room. Intimate guestrooms in shades of either blue or bordeaux have an old-school dressing room feel.
